Researchers at The Miriam Hospital and Brown University have recently received funding from the National Institutes of Health to test a smoking cessation program, Commit to Quit, at YMCA of Greater Providence. You will receive a 12-week state of the art smoking cessation program. You will also be randomly assigned to receive either an exercise or wellness program in addition to the quit smoking program. Four hundred female smokers will be recruited over a two-year time span to participate in the 12-week program. For your participation in the program, we will provide the program at no charge, you can receive nicotine patches for free, and you can earn up to $200 for completing our questionnaires at the end of the program, and at 3, 6, and 12 months. If you are eligible, we will ask you to obtain physician consent to participate, attend an Orientation meeting, and then to attend the 12-week program. We will ask you questions during and after the program about your smoking, general health, exercise, and mood that help us determine if the program was effective.
If you think you are interested, we will ask you to complete a screener to determine if you are eligible.
The only known risk to you for completing the screener is that it will take a few minutes of your time.
You will not incur any cost nor will you receive any payment for participating in this screener.
Your participation in this screener is voluntary. You may refuse to answer any of the questions asked and your responses to these questions are confidential.
May we continue with this screen now that you have heard the description of the screen?
